What to Do if Your Little One Is Afraid of the Dentist

Fear of the dentist in young children is often caused by a bad experience, but also by the uncertainty of not knowing what to expect and even simply by the nerves passed on by adults.

One of the most effective ways to ease these fears is to get them used to visiting the dentist regularly, not only when they have pain or need an extraction.

As well as helping them maintain good oral health, you’ll also allow your child to become familiar with the dental environment, so they won’t perceive it as something to fear.

At Dental Numancia we create the perfect setting so children feel comfortable from the very first second.

As specialists in paediatric dentistry in Tenerife, our priority is the calm and comfort of our little patients.

When to Take Your Child to a Paediatric Dentist in Tenerife

First things first: dental check-ups should start from the first year.

No — bringing your little one only when they’re in discomfort, or when tooth decay has already done its damage, isn’t ideal.

Waiting until this point can have serious consequences for their dental health.

Timely prevention and treatment won’t only help them avoid painful tooth decay; it will also support healthy development of their teeth and bite.

This, as well as affecting their chewing function, can also improve nasal breathing and promote correct swallowing.

Remember that at this stage their bones are still growing, so we can take advantage of that potential to guide them and make the space needed for the permanent teeth.

4 Problems You’ll Avoid by Bringing Your Child to the Dentist

You won’t only help them attend their check-ups with greater confidence and calm — you’ll do much more for your child:

You’ll help prevent early tooth decay

At Dental Numancia, we work on actively preventing tooth decay through personalised treatments and advice to help stop it developing in baby teeth.

You’ll protect them from malocclusions

We detect and address these issues early, supporting healthy dental development and avoiding complications in the alignment of permanent teeth.

You’ll prevent harmful habits from persisting

We guide parents on controlling habits that can affect oral development, such as thumb-sucking or prolonged dummy use, helping protect jaw health.

You’ll add a protective barrier against gum-health problems

As your paediatric dentist in Tenerife, our professional dental cleaning helps prevent gum-health problems, promoting healthy gums and preventing periodontal disease.

Frequently Asked Questions about Paediatric Dentistry in Tenerife

How often should I take my child to a paediatric dentist in Tenerife?

Bring your child to the dentist at least once a year. This will allow us to check and prevent any issues.

What toothpaste should my child use and how much should I put on their brush?

The type of toothpaste your little one should use depends on their age and dental development:

  • When the first tooth erupts: Use toothpaste with 1000 ppm fluoride.
  • From age 6 (or if they’re at risk of tooth decay): Use toothpaste with 1450 ppm fluoride.

As for the amount, it varies as follows:

  • Babies: Moisten the bristles slightly.
  • Ages 2 to 6: The amount should be the size of a grain of rice.
  • Over 6: In this case it should be the size of a pea.

How can I help my child avoid needing orthodontics?

First, avoid always giving soft diets or food that’s completely mashed or puréed.

Don’t forget that good chewing of hard, dry foods on both sides of the mouth, with lips closed, helps stimulate their muscles and bones.

The result? This habit creates space for permanent teeth to come through aligned, reducing the likelihood of needing orthodontic treatment.

When should I replace my child’s toothbrush?

Change the toothbrush every 3 months.

A tip: To help you remember, use each change of season as a guide.

Also remember that children often chew on the toothbrush, so if the bristles are already very flattened, you can change it sooner.

In addition, if your child has been ill, it’s best to replace it.

Up to what age should I supervise my child’s brushing?

At least until age 8–9. Up to that age we recommend parents go over the brushing.

Don’t forget to pay special attention to the back molars and to the parts of the teeth next to the gumline, which are often missed.
